Kehteste

Kehteste is a coastal city and municipality in the eastern part of the fictional country of Aldoria. Located on the Kehta estuary at the mouth of the Kehta River, it borders the Verdan and Silmere regions. As of 2023, the municipality had an estimated population of 42,800 and covered about 110 square kilometers. The name derives from Old Aldorian kehta meaning harbor and este meaning estuary.

Geography and climate: The city sits on a low-lying coastal plain with scattered hills to the south. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild winters, cool summers, and regular rainfall influenced by the surrounding sea. The estuary and nearby wetlands support birdlife and commercial fishing.

History: Kehteste was founded by fishing communities in the 12th century and gradually developed as a regional trading hub. It received a town charter in the 15th century and expanded its port in the late 19th century during industrialization. The late 20th century saw modernization of port facilities and rail connections, boosting services and tourism.

Economy and infrastructure: The local economy centers on fishing, fish processing, maritime services, and logistics. The port handles commercial traffic and passenger ferries. The city hosts a marine research center affiliated with the national university system and several small craft industries. A coastal highway and a regional rail line connect Kehteste with larger urban centers.

Culture: Kehteste maintains a maritime cultural identity, with the annual Seaward Festival featuring seafood tastings, boat parades, and music. The local dialect of Aldorian is spoken alongside the national language. Notable landmarks include Saint Birgitta’s Church, the Blue Gate, and Harbor Park.

Governance and education: Kehteste is governed by a municipal council with 19 seats and a directly elected mayor. It forms part of Verdan Province within Aldoria. The city hosts Kehteste University of Marine Sciences and two public high schools.
