Kehitystasoja (Finnish for "levels of development") refers to the conceptual framework used to categorize the stages of economic, social, and technological progress within societies or regions. The concept is often applied in fields such as sociology, economics, and international development to analyze disparities between countries or communities. While no universally accepted model exists, common frameworks include Rostow’s stages of economic growth, the Human Development Index (HDI), and the United Nations’ classification of developing, developed, and least developed nations.

The idea of developmental stages typically begins with agrarian societies, progressing through industrialization, and advancing into post-industrial or service-based economies. Early theories, such as those proposed by Walt Rostow in the 1960s, outlined five sequential phases: traditional society, preconditions for take-off, take-off, drive to maturity, and high mass consumption. Critics argue that such linear models oversimplify complex historical and cultural variations, as development is influenced by factors like geography, governance, and historical events.

Modern approaches emphasize multidimensional indicators rather than rigid classifications. The Human Development Index, for example, assesses development based on life expectancy, education, and income rather than economic output alone. Similarly, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations prioritize holistic progress, including social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience.
