Keelmandlid

Keelmandlid, also known as the keelback or sea snake, is a genus of marine snakes found in the family Hydrophiidae. The genus includes two species: Hydrophis melanocephalus and Hydrophis platurus. Keelmandlids are characterized by their elongated bodies, which can reach lengths of up to 2.5 meters, and their distinctive keeled scales that run along their backs. These scales are unique to the genus and help to distinguish keelmandlids from other marine snakes.

Keelmandlids are found in the coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well as the Red Sea. They are known for their venomous bites, which can be painful and potentially dangerous to humans. However, keelmandlids are not typically aggressive and will usually only bite if provoked or threatened.

Keelmandlids are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. The females typically lay a clutch of 10-20 eggs, which are then guarded by the mother until they hatch. The hatchlings are independent from birth and are capable of swimming and hunting for food shortly after emerging from their eggs.

Keelmandlids play an important role in their ecosystems as predators of small fish and invertebrates.
