Kaulahuivit

Kaulahuivit are a type of neckwear worn for warmth and style, common in Finland and other Nordic regions. They are worn around the neck, sometimes covering part of the lower face, and can function as practical cold-weather clothing as well as a fashion accessory.

Most kaulahuivit are knitted, crocheted, woven, or sewn from fibers such as wool, wool blends, acrylic, cotton, or fleece. They can be handmade or commercially produced. Typical dimensions vary, with rectangular scarves around 100–180 cm in length and 15–30 cm in width, though shorter or wider variants exist. Some kaulahuivit are tubular or circular, forming an endless loop that is pulled over the head rather than tied.

Styles and construction differ. The traditional rectangular scarf is often worn wrapped around the neck with ends hanging down, sometimes with fringes. Tubular or infinity kaulahuivit, created by knitting in the round, form a continuous loop for easy wearing. Patterns range from plain solid colors to geometric or Nordic motifs, and both simple and decorative options are common. Care instructions depend on the fiber but wool typically requires gentle washing and air drying, while acrylics are more forgiving in regular machine washing.

Kaulahuivit serve a practical function in cold climates, providing warmth to the neck and upper chest and helping to conserve body heat. They are widely used across ages and genders and appear in everyday wear as well as outdoor activities. In addition to practicality, kaulahuivit are also produced as craft projects and gifts, reflecting regional knitting traditions and fashion preferences.
