Kaufungen

Kaufungen is a town in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg in the state of Hesse, Germany. Situated at the northern edge of the Weser Uplands, it lies approximately 28 km southeast of Kassel and 18 km west of Bad Hersfeld. The surrounding landscape is characterized by forested hills, the Kaufunger Wald, and the valley of the river Unstrut. The town itself is divided into several districts, with the central area retaining a medieval layout and several historic buildings.

Historically, the first documented mention of Kaufungen dates back to 1105 under the name “Cusge.” The town received its municipal charter in the late Middle Ages and became an important local administrative center during the Hesse-Kassel period. In the 19th century, the construction of the East West Railway brought greater connectivity; the nearby railway station remains a vital transport link. During World War II, a small subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp was established in Kaufungen, associated with forced labor in the local industrial sector. After the war, the town underwent reconstruction and gradual economic diversification.
