Katarakten

Katarakten, meaning cataracts in English, is a common age-related condition characterized by the clouding of the lens in the eye. This clouding obstructs the passage of light, leading to a gradual decrease in vision. Initially, symptoms may be subtle, such as slight blurring or a feeling of seeing through a foggy window. As the cataract progresses, vision can become significantly impaired, making daily activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces difficult. Colors may appear faded, and glare from lights, especially at night, can become a major problem.

The formation of cataracts is primarily due to changes in the proteins that make up the eye's lens. Over time, these proteins can break down and clump together, causing the lens to lose its transparency. While aging is the most significant risk factor, other contributing factors include diabetes, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, smoking, and certain medications like corticosteroids.

Diagnosis of cataracts is typically made through a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist, which includes tests to assess visual acuity and examine the lens. In the early stages, stronger eyeglasses or brighter lighting may be sufficient to manage symptoms. However, when cataracts significantly interfere with vision and quality of life, surgical removal is the most effective treatment. Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This is a common and generally safe procedure with a high success rate, restoring clear vision for most patients.
