Kaskelens

Kaskelens is a small, coastal municipality located on the southern shore of the island of Elorin in the kingdom of Valeius. With a population of approximately 6,200 residents, the town serves as a modest fishing hub and a growing center for artisanal craftsmanship. The settlement lies at an elevation of 12 meters above sea level and is bordered by the North Sea to the west and the dense Pinewood Forest to the east.

The origins of Kaskelens can be traced back to the early 13th century, when settlers established a fishing outpost on a rocky peninsula. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area was previously inhabited by the indigenous Talari people, who revered the surrounding sea as a source of life and protection. The town’s name is said to derive from the Old Elorin word “kaskal”, meaning “watchtower,” referencing the watchtowers that once guarded the harbor against piracy.

During the 16th century, Kaskelens experienced significant growth due to the expansion of the timber trade, as wood was floated downriver to the more central ports. The timber industry provided a steady source of income, and many of the town’s current artisans trace their lineage back to these timber workers. The town’s architecture reflects this heritage, with many buildings constructed from locally felled pine and oak.

In recent decades, Kaskelens has become known for its annual Sea‑Feast festival, celebrating the sea’s bounty with music, boat races, and a display of intricate shell jewelry. The festival attracts visitors from across Valeius and is a key event for the town’s tourism sector.

Kaskelens remains a small yet vibrant community, balancing its traditional fishing and woodcraft industries with emerging eco-tourism and cultural preservation efforts. Cultural center "Cove House" houses the town’s handmade crafts. The municipal council oversees local affairs, focusing on sustainable development and community wellbeing.
