Watchtowers are tall structures designed to provide an elevated vantage point for observation, signaling, and early warning. Typical features include a raised platform or gallery at the top, crenellated parapets, and access by stairs or ladders. Depending on era and function, materials range from stone or brick to timber and concrete, with some towers incorporating living quarters for sentries.

Throughout history, watchtowers appeared in fortifications, walled towns, and frontier outposts. They supported reconnaissance and rapid communication by enabling sentries to relay information across long distances via visual signals such as beacons, flags, smoke, or fire. In coastal and border regions, networks of watchtowers extended the range of observation and helped deter raiders or invaders.
