Karthikeya

Karthikeya, also known as Murugan, Skanda, Kumara, and Subrahmanya, is a major Hindu god of war, youth, and divine leadership. He is traditionally regarded as the son of Shiva and Parvati and the brother of Ganesha. In South Asian Hinduism, he is especially venerated in the Tamil tradition where he is a central figure in temple worship and poetry.

The name Karthikeya is often linked to the six Krittikas (the Pleiades) in the sky, and he is commonly called Shanmukha for his six faces. Iconography usually portrays him with six faces, a vel (spear) given by Parvati, and a vehicle of a peacock. His principal consorts are Valli and Deivanai in many legends, though regional myths vary in detail.

Mythologically, Karthikeya is depicted as arising to defeat the demon Tarakasura, a mission that establishes cosmic balance and celestial order. He is said to have been nourished by the six Krittikas and to have grown into a youthful, ascetic leader who embodies courage, wisdom, and martial prowess. Variants of the tale emphasize his divine birth, youthful valor, and ultimate triumph over demons.

Worship and temples: In Tamil Nadu, Murugan is especially worshiped at six prominent temples known as the Arupadai Veedu: Thiruchendur, Tirupparankundram, Palani, Swamimalai, Tiruthani, and Pazhamudircholai. Major festivals include Thaipusam and Skanda Sashti, often featuring Kavadiprocessions and large pilgrimages to Murugan shrines.

Cultural role: Karthikeya occupies a central place in devotional literature, temple architecture, and ritual practice, representing protection, victory, and divine wisdom. He is revered across India and in the Indian diaspora.
