Sashti
Sashti refers to the sixth day of each lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar. The lunar fortnight is divided into two phases: the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) and the waning moon (Krishna Paksha). Sashti marks the sixth day in both these phases. It is a significant day dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya, Skanda, or Subrahmanya, the Hindu god of war. Devotees often observe fasts on Sashti and visit Murugan temples to offer prayers and seek his blessings. Special pujas and rituals are performed in his honor during this time. The Sashti vrata, or fast, is believed to bestow good fortune, courage, and protection against negative forces. The significance of Sashti is particularly pronounced during important festivals related to Lord Murugan, such as Skanda Sashti, which commemorates his victory over the demon Surapadman. The day is considered auspicious for new beginnings and is often chosen for important ceremonies. The specific rituals and observances can vary across different regions and traditions within Hinduism, but the core devotion to Lord Murugan remains consistent.
