The term is most commonly associated with the Cartesian coordinate system, a method for representing geometric figures algebraically using two or more perpendicular axes.

The Cartesian coordinate system is a fundamental tool in mathematics, physics, and engineering. It allows for the precise description of points, lines, and shapes in space by assigning numerical coordinates to each dimension. For example, in a two-dimensional plane, a point is defined by its (x, y) coordinates, where x and y represent distances along perpendicular axes. This system extends to three dimensions with (x, y, z) coordinates, enabling the representation of three-dimensional space.
