Karstausta

Karstausta is a textile finishing process that raises the short fibers on the surface of a fabric to create a soft, fuzzy nap. The result is a warmer, more plush hand and a visible surface texture often described as napped or pile-like. The term karstausta is used in Finnish textile contexts to refer to what is commonly called napping in English.

The process is typically achieved with mechanical equipment such as rotating napping rollers, wire or nylon brushes, or other devices that lift and align surface fibers. Nap length and uniformity are controlled by machine settings, fabric structure, and process parameters. After napping, a shearing step is sometimes employed to achieve a consistent nap height, and in many cases a heat-setting or stabilization treatment follows to fix the fibers and improve dimensional stability.

Materials and variations: Karstausta is applied to a wide range of fabrics, including wool and wool blends, cotton fabrics like flannel, and certain synthetics. The response of the fabric depends on fiber type, yarn construction, and whether the fabric is carded or combed. The resulting nap can vary from a short, even fuzz to a longer, more pronounced pile, influencing warmth, drape, and appearance.

Applications and care: Napped fabrics are common in apparel such as shirts and sweaters, as well as upholstery and outerwear materials where softness and insulation are desirable. The nap can affect dye depth and texture, and fabrics may require specific care to minimize pilling and to preserve the nap over time.
