Karkotaks

Karkotaks are a fictional genus of serpentine creatures in the fantasy world of Eldoria. They are large, carnivorous reptiles notable for their iridescent scales, a pronounced dorsal crest, and keen heat-sensing pits. Adults typically range from 1.8 to 2.5 meters in length, with lighter individuals found in rainforest zones. They move with a sinuous, almost gliding gait and can climb low shrubs.

Karkotaks inhabit temperate forests, river valleys, and limestone caves. They prefer moist microhabitats and rich leaf litter. They are ambush predators, relying on camouflage and sudden strikes. Their venom is potent but delivered in moderate doses, causing pain, disorientation, and temporary paralysis in prey. They can co-exist with other predators where food is abundant, but territorial individuals defend coves and basking ledges.

Reproduction: Karkotaks are ovoviviparous. Females give birth to 4–12 live young after a gestation of 3–5 months. Juveniles begin hunting within weeks of birth and reach sexual maturity within 2–4 years.

Relationship with humans: In Eldorian folklore, Karkotaks are sometimes seen as guardians of sacred groves. Bite can induce vivid dreams or temporary night blindness, leading to caution around their habitat. Some legends attribute a shapeshifting or memory-enhancing property to venom at certain doses, though no scientific basis exists in the setting.

Conservation and myth: Habitat loss in Eldoria has reduced some populations. Cultural records treat Karkotaks as both feared and revered symbols of forest health.
