Karibib

Karibib is a town in the Erongo Region of central‑western Namibia, situated about 120 kilometres north of the capital Windhoek along the B2 highway that connects Namibia’s interior with the coastal city of Swakopmund. As of the 2021 census the town had roughly 5 800 inhabitants, a mixture of Ovambo, Herero, Damara and people of European descent, reflecting its colonial and post‑independence history.

Founded in 1900 as a railway station on the Otavi–Swakopmund line, Karibib developed as a service centre for the surrounding agricultural and mining districts. The town’s economy is anchored by the Karibib Mine, a former open‑pit operation that extracted copper, lead and zinc before its closure in the early 1990s; the site was later repurposed for small‑scale mineral exploration. Tourism also contributes to local income, with the historic Dutch Reformed Church, the German‑era post office, and the nearby Swing–Lupena karst landscape attracting visitors. The town hosts a campus of the University of Namibia, offering courses in environmental science and community development.

Karibib experiences a semi‑arid climate, characterised by hot summers, cool winters and an annual rainfall of around 250 mm, mostly falling between November and March. The town provides basic services such as a health centre, primary and secondary schools, and a police station. Its strategic position on the national road and the railway makes it a logistical hub for freight moving between the interior and the coast, while also serving as a gateway for travellers heading toward the Namib Desert and the historic mining towns of the Otavi mountain range.
