Karbocisteine

The mechanism of action for karbocisteine involves stimulating the goblet cells in the respiratory epithelium to produce less sialylated mucin, which is a component of thick mucus. It also promotes the secretion of lower viscosity mucus. This results in a reduction of mucus adherence to the airway walls, facilitating its expulsion through ciliary action and coughing.

Karbocisteine is typically administered orally in the form of capsules, tablets, or syrup.
