Karagiozis
Karagiozis is the central character of the traditional Greek shadow theater known as karagioziko or shadow-play. The figure is derived from the Turkish shadow theater Karagöz and Hacivat and entered the Greek-speaking world during the Ottoman period. In Greece, Karagiozis became both the name of the stock character and the umbrella term for the genre, which flourished especially in urban centers.
Performances use puppets cut from leather or parchment, with movable limbs, that are held backstage and cast
Characterizations include a range of stock figures—neighbors, servants, priests, sultans, and other bureaucrats—who interact with Karagiozis
Today Karagiozis remains an important element of Greek cultural heritage. It is studied by scholars, preserved
