Kammallar
Kammallar is a term historically used in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, to refer to a community of artisans. The word is derived from the Tamil word "kammal" meaning craftsmanship or skill. This community traditionally encompassed a range of skilled trades, including goldsmiths, silversmiths, blacksmiths, coppersmiths, carpenters, sculptors, masons, and architects.
The Kammallar community played a vital role in the socio-economic fabric of traditional South Indian society.
Historically, the Kammallar community was considered a distinct social group, often placed in a specific position
