Kamerastøy, also known as image noise, is a random variation of brightness or color information in images generated by digital cameras and other image sensors. It arises from various sources, including the inherent limitations of the sensor's light-gathering capabilities, the amplification process required to convert the captured light into a digital signal, and environmental factors like temperature.

There are several types of camera noise. Luminance noise affects the brightness of pixels, appearing as a grainy texture. Chrominance noise, on the other hand, affects the color information, leading to specks of random color within the image. Digital sensors generate noise even in complete darkness, known as dark current noise, which is influenced by temperature and exposure time. Photon shot noise is an inherent statistical variation in the number of photons detected by each pixel, and it becomes more noticeable in low-light conditions.

Camera noise can degrade image quality, reducing detail and making images appear less sharp and pleasing. Photographers often employ various techniques to mitigate noise. These include shooting in good lighting conditions to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio, using a lower ISO setting to minimize signal amplification, and employing noise reduction software during post-processing. Many cameras also have built-in noise reduction features that can be applied in-camera. Understanding the causes and characteristics of camera noise is crucial for achieving high-quality photographic results, especially in challenging shooting environments.
