Kaitsekattoja

Kaitsekattoja is a Finnish term that translates to "defense shelters" or "protective roofs." It generally refers to structures designed to provide protection from various threats, most commonly from aerial bombardment or other forms of attack. While the term can encompass a broad range of protective constructions, it is most often associated with civil defense infrastructure built during the Cold War era.

These shelters were typically constructed from reinforced concrete and designed to withstand significant explosive force and radiation fallout. Their construction was a part of national civil defense strategies aimed at safeguarding civilian populations during periods of heightened geopolitical tension. Many of these structures were built underground or integrated into existing buildings to offer greater concealment and protection.

The purpose of kaitsekattoja was to provide a safe haven for people to take shelter during air raids or other emergencies. They were often equipped with basic amenities such as ventilation systems, water supplies, and sanitation facilities, although the level of comfort and preparedness varied significantly depending on the specific shelter and its intended use.
