Kaffeegedeck

Kaffeegedeck is a term used in German-speaking contexts to denote a standard coffee service set used for serving coffee and accompanying foods during a Kaffeezeit or for a formal coffee service. A typical Kaffeegedeck consists of a coffee cup with a matching saucer, and often includes a small plate for pastries or cake. In many traditional sets, the service also includes a sugar bowl, a creamer (Sahne- oder Milchkännchen), and a coffee spoon. Some configurations provide a separate dessert plate or Kuchenteller for each guest, especially in formal settings. The exact contents vary by region, manufacturer, and era.

Historically, Kaffeegedeck emerged with the rise of porcelain production and coffee-house culture in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. In German-speaking areas, the Kaffeegedeck was part of the broader Tafelgedeck (table setting) and could be elaborately decorated with patterns and gilding. Owning multiple sets for different occasions—from everyday use to Sunday or holiday gatherings—was common.
