Kaavanteko

Kaavanteko is a Finnish term that translates to "wood bending" or "wood shaping." It refers to traditional artisanal techniques used to shape wood, often through the application of heat and moisture, to create curved forms. Historically, this method was crucial for producing various functional and decorative items, particularly in shipbuilding, furniture making, and the creation of tools and everyday objects.

The process of kaavanteko typically involves carefully heating and steeping wood in hot water or steam. This makes the lignin, a complex polymer in wood, more pliable. Once softened, the wood can be bent and held in the desired shape using jigs, molds, or clamps. As the wood dries and cools, it retains the new curvature, offering a strong and durable form. Different types of wood respond differently to kaavanteko, with hardwoods like oak and ash being commonly used due to their strength and ability to hold a bend. This technique allowed for the creation of elegant, flowing lines in wooden objects that would be difficult or impossible to achieve through other methods.
