Kõvenemisviisist, often translated as "hardening method" or "quenching process," refers to a thermal treatment process used in metallurgy to increase the hardness and strength of metals, particularly steels. This process involves heating the metal to a specific temperature above its critical point, where it transforms into a softer, more malleable phase. Subsequently, the metal is rapidly cooled, or "quenched," in a medium such as water, oil, or brine. This rapid cooling prevents the material from returning to its original, softer state, instead trapping the atoms in a harder, more brittle crystalline structure, typically martensite.

The effectiveness of a kõvenemisviisist depends on several factors. The austenitizing temperature, which is the temperature to which the metal is heated, must be carefully controlled to ensure complete transformation to the desired phase. The cooling rate is also crucial; too slow a cooling rate will not achieve the desired hardness, while an excessively fast rate can lead to thermal shock and cracking, especially in thicker or more complex shapes. The choice of quenching medium also influences the cooling rate and the resulting properties. Water provides a very rapid quench, suitable for many steels, while oil offers a slower, less severe quench, reducing the risk of cracking.

Following the hardening process, metals are often subjected to a tempering process to reduce their brittleness and improve toughness, albeit at the cost of some hardness. Tempering involves reheating the hardened metal to a lower temperature and holding it for a period before cooling, allowing for controlled changes in the microstructure to achieve a balance between hardness and ductility.
