Jõustust

Jõustust, or athletics, refers to a group of sports that focus on running, jumping, and throwing. In Estonian usage the term kergejõustik is commonly used to describe track and field events, while jõustust may be used more broadly to denote physical culture and sport. The core disciplines are divided into track events (sprints, middle- and long-distance, hurdles, steeplechase, relays), field events (jumps and throws), and combined events (decathlon and heptathlon). Cross country, road racing, and race walking are often considered related disciplines within the wider athletics family.

The sport is governed internationally by World Athletics and by European Athletics on the continental level, with national structures such as Eesti Kergejõustikuliit responsible for Estonia. These bodies organize competitions, regulate rules, and oversee anti-doping measures and athlete development.

Competitions range from national championships to international events at the Olympic Games and World Championships, as well as the European Championships and various Diamond and World Indoor meet circuits. Athletes compete across age groups from youth to masters.

Training for jõustust emphasizes technique, speed, endurance, strength, and injury prevention, usually under trained coaches and with periodization. Facilities typically include a standard track, arena for field events, and appropriate equipment for throws and jumps.

Jõustust is a foundational sport in many education systems and communities, promoting physical fitness, discipline, and competitive achievement. It remains a versatile activity for participation at all levels, from school workouts to elite performance.
