Jälgimisnumber, or tracking number, is a unique code assigned to a parcel by a postal or courier service. It allows both senders and recipients to monitor the shipment’s journey from origin to delivery. The number is recorded in the carrier’s information system and is usually provided on the receipt, confirmation email, or text message when the item is sent.

Formats of tracking numbers vary by carrier and service level. Some are numeric strings, others alphanumeric, and they may include prefixes, separators, or check digits. Because there is no universal standard, the appearance of a tracking number can differ widely between services.

Using a tracking number typically involves entering it on the carrier’s website or mobile app, or on third‑party tracking sites. The tracking page shows events such as picked up, in transit, arrived at sorting facility, out for delivery, and delivered. Updates may be delayed or incomplete depending on the carrier and the jurisdiction.

Limitations: not all shipments have tracking, and some small or domestic items may be only partially trackable. Privacy: a tracking number can reveal delivery details, so it should be shared only with the intended recipient and the carrier.
