Juurituhoja

Juurituhoja is a Finnish term that translates to "root rot" in English. It refers to a condition characterized by the decay and deterioration of plant roots caused primarily by soil-borne fungal pathogens. The most common organisms responsible for juurituhoja are species of the genera Phytophthora, Pythium, and Fusarium, among others. These pathogens infect the root systems of plants, impairing their ability to absorb water and nutrients effectively, leading to wilting, stunted growth, and in severe cases, plant death.

Juurituhoja typically manifests through symptoms such as yellowing or browning of leaves, soft and discolored roots, and a general decline in plant vigor. The disease often develops in conditions of poor drainage, excessive moisture, or soil compaction, which create favorable environments for pathogen proliferation. It can affect a wide range of plants, including trees, shrubs, vegetables, and ornamental plants.

Management of juurituhoja involves improving soil drainage, reducing soil moisture levels, and avoiding mechanical injury to roots that can facilitate pathogen entry. Use of resistant plant varieties and application of fungal control agents, such as fungicides, can also be effective preventative measures. Crop rotation and soil sanitation are additional practices aimed at reducing pathogen presence in the soil.
