Junák

Junák – český skaut, commonly referred to simply as Junák, is the Czech Republic’s national Scouting organization. It serves as the umbrella for most Czech Scout groups and is a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). The organization aims to develop young people through outdoor activities, teamwork, volunteering, and personal growth. It offers programs for both boys and girls and operates through local units across the country, organized into districts and regional structures.

History and status: Scouting began in the Czech lands in the early 20th century, and Junák emerged as the national Scouting body in the region. The movement faced suppression during the mid-20th century under the communist regime, when Scouting activities were banned and suppressed. After the Velvet Revolution, Scouting was revived, and Junák was reestablished as the main Czech Scout organization. In the post-communist era, Junák aligned with international Scouting structures and expanded its programs to contemporary needs while maintaining traditional Scout ideals.

Activities and program: Junák runs a wide range of activities focused on outdoor skills, camping, hiking, first aid, environmental stewardship, and community service. The organization emphasizes leadership development, civic engagement, and intercultural exchange, often through local troops, camps, and national or regional jamborees. Its programs are designed to be inclusive and accessible to youth with diverse interests and backgrounds.

Membership and structure: Local troops are led by volunteer leaders and supported by district and regional committees. The organization relies on membership fees, fundraising, and public or private support for operations and programs. As a national Scouting body, Junák participates in international Scouting activities and collaborates with other youth organizations in the Czech Republic.
