Jowly

Jowly is an adjective used to describe a person or animal that has prominent or sagging skin on the lower cheeks and jawline. This characteristic is often associated with age, as the skin naturally loses elasticity and begins to droop over time. However, it can also be influenced by genetics, weight gain and loss, and certain medical conditions.

In humans, jowly features can be a source of self-consciousness for some individuals, leading to various cosmetic procedures aimed at reducing their appearance. These can include surgical options like facelifts and neck lifts, or non-surgical treatments such as fillers, Botox, and radiofrequency treatments.

In animals, particularly certain dog breeds like Bulldogs, Basset Hounds, and Mastiffs, a jowly appearance is considered a breed standard and a desirable characteristic. The loose skin around their muzzle and jaw contributes to their distinctive facial structure and can sometimes lead to health issues if not properly cared for, such as skin infections in the folds.
