JetDirectRAW

JetDirectRAW is a term used to describe the raw printing path used with HP JetDirect network printing hardware. It refers to sending print data directly to a printer over a network without data translation by a driver or intermediary language negotiation. In practice, a RAW queue or channel is configured on the printing system, and the client transmits the bytes of a print job to the printer’s network port, typically using TCP port 9100.

Origins and scope: HP JetDirect is a family of network interface cards and print servers introduced to enable printer access over Ethernet and other networks. The RAW option emerged as a simple, language-agnostic way to push data to printers that can interpret various page description languages (such as PCL or PostScript) or other printer-specific formats directly on the device.

Technical aspects: When using JetDirectRAW, the sending host is responsible for delivering a complete print job to the printer. The protocol itself provides no built-in job control or language negotiation; the printer handles rendering based on its supported languages. This approach contrasts with routed or managed printing that performs server-side document translation.

Usage and considerations: RAW is commonly used in environments where direct, low-latency print submission is desirable or where the printer already knows how to interpret the incoming data. Security considerations include exposure of port 9100 to networks; access should be restricted or protected with proper network controls.
