Jawazat

Jawazat, short for the General Directorate of Passports (Arabic: جوازات), is a Saudi government agency under the Ministry of Interior. It is responsible for matters related to travel documents and entry into and exit from the country. Its remit includes issuing and renewing Saudi passports for citizens, managing residency and exit/re-entry procedures for residents, and enforcing immigration and border controls at ports of entry.

Key functions include processing visas for foreign nationals, issuing travel documents during emergencies, and maintaining civil and travel records in coordination with other government agencies. The Jawazat operates through regional offices and service centers, and it administers identity verification, fingerprinting, and security checks as part of passport and residency processing.

Technology and modernization: The Jawazat has expanded its use of digital services under Saudi Arabia's e-government initiatives. Residents and citizens can access many services online through Absher, including appointment scheduling, application status, and some renewals. In line with Vision 2030, the agency has pursued automation, online processing, and improved border-control systems to increase efficiency and security.

Organization and oversight: The Jawazat is part of the Ministry of Interior and is led by the Director General of Passports. It collaborates with other ministries, security agencies, and international partners on visa policies, travel advisories, and border management.
