Isäntäkehyksiä, often translated as host frames or parent frames, are a fundamental concept in computer graphics and robotics, particularly in the context of coordinate transformations. They represent a reference coordinate system within which other objects or coordinate systems are defined. Think of it as a local anchor point.

When dealing with hierarchical structures, such as a robot arm with multiple joints, each joint or segment can be thought of as having its own coordinate system. However, these local systems are typically defined relative to a parent coordinate system. This parent system is the "isäntäkehys" or host frame. For instance, the coordinate system for a robot's forearm might be defined relative to the coordinate system of the robot's upper arm. The upper arm's system, in turn, would be defined relative to the robot's base frame.

Transformations, like rotations and translations, are applied to move objects from their local isäntäkehys to a global or world coordinate system. Understanding isäntäkehyksiä is crucial for accurately calculating the position and orientation of objects in 3D space, especially when dealing with complex articulated systems. This hierarchical approach simplifies the management of transformations, as only relative transformations between adjacent frames need to be calculated.
