Core ideas of invirtualization involve isolating code execution and resources inside a software boundary. Techniques may include sandboxing, API interception, and virtualization of resources at the library or process level. Practical approaches can rely on operating system isolation primitives such as namespaces, cgroups, or sandboxing tools, as well as runtime libraries that emulate interfaces to external resources. Invirtualization is sometimes described as complementary to containerization or hardware virtualization rather than a replacement.

Applications and use cases for invirtualization include secure execution of untrusted code, testing and development environments, multi-tenant software platforms, and portable application packaging that avoids full virtual machines.
