Inverter motors, also known as variable frequency drives (VFDs) or AC drives, are electric motors whose speed is controlled by varying the frequency of the alternating current supplied to them. Traditional AC motors run at a fixed speed determined by the power grid's frequency and the motor's design. Inverter motors, however, offer a significant advantage by allowing for precise speed control.

The core of an inverter motor system is the inverter itself. This electronic device takes the fixed-frequency, fixed-voltage AC power from the grid and converts it into a variable-frequency, variable-voltage AC output. By adjusting the frequency, the inverter directly influences the speed at which the motor rotates. Lower frequencies result in slower speeds, while higher frequencies lead to faster speeds.

This variable speed capability offers numerous benefits. Energy efficiency is a primary advantage, as the motor only consumes the amount of power necessary for the required speed, unlike fixed-speed motors that often run at full capacity even when less is needed.
