Inversiomalleja

Inversiomalleja refers to inverse models in Finnish. An inverse model is a computational or mathematical technique used to infer the causes or properties of a system based on observed effects or data. This is in contrast to a forward model, which predicts the effects of known causes. In essence, an inverse problem seeks to determine the input parameters of a system given its output.

These models are widely applied across various scientific and engineering disciplines. In geophysics, inversion is used to determine the subsurface structure of the Earth from seismic or gravity measurements. In medical imaging, techniques like CT and MRI rely on inverse modeling to reconstruct internal body structures from external measurements. In signal processing, inversion can be used to de-noise or enhance signals.

The process of creating and using an inverse model typically involves defining a forward model that relates the unknown parameters to the observable data. Then, an algorithm is employed to iteratively adjust the unknown parameters until the model's predictions match the observed data as closely as possible. This often involves optimization techniques and can be challenging due to issues like non-uniqueness (multiple sets of parameters can produce similar data) and instability (small errors in data can lead to large errors in the inferred parameters). Regularization methods are frequently used to mitigate these challenges and obtain stable, meaningful solutions.
