Intramicrotubule

The intramicrotubule is a category of dense granules found within certain microtubules. Microtubules are tubular structures composed of tubulin subunits, which are essential for various cellular processes such as cell division, intracellular transport, and maintaining the cytoskeleton's structural integrity. Intramicrotubules, however, pose a distinct problem as they are enclosed within the framework of larger microtubules, often displacing or embedding tubulin subunits in the process.

Microtubules within the brain contain periodic aggregations of intramicrotubules, which contribute to the structural heterogeneity of these microtubules. Unlike larger microtubules, intramicrotubules typically lack voids between units and exhibit density inflows from adjacent tubulin subunits. The physical interaction and incorporation of intramicrotubules within microtubules can obscure structural attributes in larger spatial contexts.
