Displacing is the act of causing something to move from its usual position or place. In everyday language, to displace a chair means to move it to another location; in a broader sense, it can refer to moving any object or material from one position to another.

In physics, displacement is a specific concept: it is the vector that points from an object's initial position to its final position, with a magnitude equal to the straight-line distance between those two points. Displacement is distinguished from distance, which is the total length of the path traveled. In kinematics, displacement is a fundamental quantity used alongside velocity and acceleration, and it depends only on the start and end points, not on the route taken. If an object returns to its starting point, its displacement is zero even though the distance traveled may be large.

In fluids and mechanics, displacement also appears in related ideas. For example, the displaced fluid volume refers to the amount of fluid moved aside by a submerged object, a principle connected to Archimedes. In geophysics and earth science, ground displacement describes the change in position of the earth’s surface due to events such as earthquakes or volcanic activity, typically measured with instruments like GPS and radar interferometry (InSAR).

In social and humanitarian contexts, displacement often refers to people who are forced to leave their homes due to conflict, disasters, or development projects. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees are examples of populations affected by such displacement, which can entail significant humanitarian and long-term implications.

The term can also appear in ecological or technological contexts, where one species, method, or technology displaces another by outcompeting or replacing it.
