Microtubules are cytoskeletal components found in eukaryotic cells, playing a crucial role in maintaining cell shape, enabling intracellular transport, and facilitating cell division. They are cylindrical structures composed primarily of tubulin proteins, which polymerize into protofilaments arranged in a hollow tube. Tubulin exists in two main isoforms: alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin, which form heterodimers that assemble into microtubules.

Microtubules exhibit dynamic instability, meaning they alternate between phases of rapid growth and spontaneous disassembly. This property allows cells to rapidly reorganize their cytoskeleton in response to various signals. The stability of microtubules can be influenced by factors such as GTP binding, post-translational modifications, and the presence of microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) or motor proteins like kinesins and dyneins.

In addition to their structural functions, microtubules serve as tracks for the movement of organelles and vesicles via motor proteins. They also play a critical role in mitosis and meiosis, where they form the mitotic spindle, which separates chromosomes during cell division. Disruptions in microtubule dynamics are associated with various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, and genetic syndromes.

Microtubules are also involved in intracellular transport, with motor proteins like kinesin and dynein moving cargo along their length. The organization of microtubules within the cell is regulated by centrosomes, which act as microtubule-organizing centers, though other structures like spindle poles and basal bodies can also initiate microtubule growth.

Research into microtubules has advanced our understanding of cell biology, leading to the development of drugs that target microtubule function, such as taxanes (e.g., paclitaxel) used in cancer therapy. These compounds stabilize microtubules, preventing cell division in rapidly dividing cancer cells.
