Intitúcie, commonly translated as institutions, are the stable, patterned ways in which a society governs behavior and coordinates actions. They encompass formal organizations such as governments, courts, schools, and businesses, as well as informal rules like norms, customs, and social roles. By shaping expectations, institutions provide a framework that reduces uncertainty, clarifies rights and obligations, allocates resources, and supports predictability in social and economic life.

Institutions can be formal or informal, public or private, and their interaction shapes policy, economic performance, and social development. Formal institutions include constitutions, legal systems, regulatory agencies, central banks, and public administrations; informal institutions include conventions about politeness, trust, and family or community roles. The effectiveness of institutions often depends on their legitimacy, enforceability, and alignment with the society’s values and capabilities.

Change in institutions occurs gradually through cultural evolution, technological progress, and economic or political shocks. They can be reformed, adapted, or replaced in response to crises or deliberate policy interventions. Path dependence and critical junctures mean that historical trajectories influence future possibilities and constraints.

Measurement and evaluation of institutions rely on indicators of governance and rule of law, property rights, regulatory quality, and corruption, gathered by international organizations and research institutes. Challenges include elite capture, bureaucratic rigidity, misalignment between formal rules and actual practice, inequality in access, and risks of institutional decay when legitimacy declines.

Understanding institutions is central to political science, economics, sociology, and development studies, offering a framework to analyze how societies organize collective action and distribute power and resources.
