Intensivvårdsavdelningar, often referred to as IVA or ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in English, are specialized hospital departments designed to provide critical care to patients with severe, life-threatening illnesses or injuries. These units are equipped with advanced medical technology and staffed by highly trained multidisciplinary teams.

The primary goal of an intensivvårdsavdelning is to monitor patients closely, manage organ dysfunction, and provide life support when necessary. Patients admitted to IVA typically require continuous monitoring of vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation. They may also require mechanical ventilation to assist breathing, dialysis for kidney failure, or other complex interventions to stabilize their condition.
