Inokulumseffekter refers to the phenomenon where the size or characteristics of the initial microbial population, known as the inoculum, can significantly influence the subsequent growth and behavior of a microbial culture. This effect is particularly important in fields such as microbiology, fermentation, and industrial biotechnology, where consistent and predictable outcomes are desired.

The inoculum's properties that can lead to these effects include its number of viable cells, its physiological state (e.g., whether it is in a lag, exponential, or stationary phase of growth), its genetic makeup, and the presence of any inhibitory or stimulatory substances carried over from the inoculum preparation. A larger inoculum generally leads to a shorter lag phase and faster attainment of the desired cell density. Conversely, a small or unhealthy inoculum may result in a prolonged lag phase, slower growth, or even failure to grow.

Furthermore, the composition of the inoculum matters. If a mixed microbial population is used, the initial ratios of different species can determine which ones become dominant in the later stages of cultivation. Similarly, if the inoculum is stressed or contaminated, these negative attributes can be propagated into the main culture, impacting product yield or quality.
