Informaticas

Informática, often translated as informatics, is the study of information processing and the design of computing systems. In many Romance-language contexts, the plural informáticas may refer to subfields, departments, or programs within universities that focus on computing, information science, and related technologies. The English term informatics is sometimes used to distinguish the field from pure computer science, though usage varies by country.

Informatics is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the acquisition, processing, storage, analysis, and communication of information. It combines theory and practice from computer science, information science, mathematics, cognitive science, and domain-specific knowledge to create systems that support human activities in business, science, education, and everyday life.

Subfields include software engineering, databases and data management, information systems, information retrieval, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, health informatics, and geographic information systems. Data science and analytics are closely related, focusing on extracting knowledge from data.

Programs in informatics or computer science prepare students in programming, systems analysis, data modeling, and project management. Careers commonly include software development, data analysis, IT consulting, systems integration, user experience design, and research.

The term informatics arose in the mid-20th century and acquired different emphases in different regions. In Europe, informatics is the standard name for computing-related studies; in North America, informatics can refer to information science, health informatics, or computing disciplines depending on the institution.
