Influenssavirukselle

Influenssavirukselle is the Finnish term for influenza virus. Influenza viruses are RNA viruses belonging to the family Orthomyxoviridae. They are the causative agents of influenza, commonly known as the flu. These viruses are responsible for seasonal epidemics that affect millions of people worldwide each year, as well as occasional pandemics.

Influenza viruses are classified into three main types: A, B, and C. Type A viruses are further divided into subtypes based on two surface proteins: hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). These subtypes, such as H1N1 and H3N2, are responsible for the most significant human epidemics. Type B viruses are also common causes of seasonal flu, while type C viruses typically cause milder respiratory illnesses and are not associated with epidemics.

Influenza viruses spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Transmission can also occur through contact with contaminated surfaces. Symptoms of influenza typically include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, and fatigue. While most people recover within a week or two, influenza can lead to serious complications, especially in young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying health conditions.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent influenza. Influenza vaccines are reformulated annually to protect against the strains predicted to circulate during the upcoming season. Antiviral medications can also be used to treat influenza, helping to reduce the severity and duration of illness. Public health measures such as hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette are also important in controlling the spread of the virus.
