Inertiasijaintijärjestelmät, often referred to as inertial navigation systems (INS), are self-contained navigation systems that continuously track the position, orientation, and velocity of a moving object without the need for external references. They achieve this by using inertial sensors, primarily accelerometers and gyroscopes, to detect and measure motion. Accelerometers measure linear acceleration along each axis, while gyroscopes measure angular velocity. By integrating these measurements over time, the system can calculate changes in velocity and position, and track the object's orientation.

The core principle behind INS is Newton's laws of motion. An accelerometer detects acceleration, and by integrating acceleration with respect to time, velocity can be determined. Integrating velocity with respect to time yields position. Gyroscopes are crucial for maintaining a stable reference frame, allowing the system to accurately distinguish between accelerations due to motion and those due to gravity, and to track changes in the object's attitude (pitch, roll, and yaw).

INS are particularly valuable in environments where external navigation aids are unavailable, unreliable, or undesirable, such as underwater, in space, or during electronic warfare. They are widely used in aircraft, spacecraft, missiles, submarines, and even in some advanced automotive applications. Despite their self-contained nature, INS are prone to drift. Errors in the initial alignment and sensor inaccuracies accumulate over time, leading to a gradual divergence of the calculated position from the true position. Therefore, INS are often coupled with other navigation systems, such as GPS, to correct for drift and maintain high accuracy. This hybrid approach, known as sensor fusion, combines the continuous, all-weather capabilities of INS with the absolute accuracy of external systems.
