Industrycoal

Industrycoal is a term used to refer to coal reserved for industrial applications, rather than residential heating or commercial electricity supply. It commonly includes both thermal coal, burned for steam generation in industrial plants and power stations serving industrial complexes, and metallurgical coal (coking coal), which is processed to produce coke for steelmaking. In practice, industrycoal contracts often specify quality parameters such as calorific value, ash content, sulfur content, and coking properties for metallurgical use.

Production and supply: Coal for industry is mined worldwide and undergoes sizing and cleaning before shipment. Quality characteristics determine market segments and pricing. Most of the world's industrycoal trade moves through seaborne markets, with major exporters including Australia and Indonesia, and large importers including China, India, Japan, and parts of Europe. Transportation, port handling, and blending to meet product specs are important aspects of the supply chain.

Environmental and policy context: Coal used in industry is subject to environmental regulation targeting emissions (including sulfur and mercury), dust, and safety. There is growing adoption of cleaner coal technologies, such as high-efficiency plants, pulverized fuel with emission controls, and carbon capture and storage, particularly where coal use remains economically viable. Long-term demand for industrycoal is linked to steel production, cement manufacturing, and electricity generation within industrial sectors; forecasts vary by region, with some areas reducing coal use in favor of natural gas or renewables, while others project continued demand for metallurgical coal.
