Industriespionage, or industrial espionage, is the covert collection of a rival’s trade secrets, proprietary processes, or strategic information to gain a commercial advantage. It can involve insiders, external agents, or state-backed actors and may be carried out through cyber intrusions, theft of documents, social engineering, or surveillance. Common targets include research and development data, product designs, customer or supplier lists, pricing strategies, and manufacturing know-how.

Historically intertwined with commerce, industrial espionage has intensified with globalization and digital networks. Cyber capabilities, phishing, and remote access tools have expanded the methods available to perpetrators. The practice is illegal in most jurisdictions when it involves unauthorized access or misappropriation of confidential information and is subject to trade secret, privacy, and criminal laws.

Impact includes lost revenue, damaged competitiveness, and potential risks to national security when strategic technologies are involved. Research and development pipelines may be slowed, and investor confidence can decline.
