Individualismcollectivism is a theoretical dimension used in cross-cultural psychology to describe how societies balance personal autonomy with group belonging. Individualist cultures emphasize personal goals, independence, and self-reliance, while collectivist cultures prioritize group harmony, interdependence, and obligations to family and community.

The concept was popularized by Geert Hofstede and further developed by researchers such as Harry Triandis and Hazel Markus and Shinobu Kitayama. It is typically measured with self-report scales that assess self-construals—whether people see themselves as independent or interdependent—and with tasks that probe preferences for direct versus indirect communication and for individual or communal decision-making. Some models add horizontal versus vertical orientations within each dimension.

In individualist contexts, people are encouraged to pursue personal achievement, autonomy, and direct argumentation; in collectivist contexts, relationships, group consensus, and social obligations often guide behavior. These orientations can influence family dynamics, education, work, and political views. Yet behavior is not determined by a single dimension; many societies exhibit both tendencies depending on the domain of life, the subculture, or situational pressures.

Cross-cultural variation is a spectrum rather than a dichotomy, and within-country differences—by region, class, age, and immigration status—are common. Globalization, urbanization, and acculturation can shift norms toward greater individualism or hybrid forms that combine both orientations.

Applications appear in psychology, management, marketing, and education, guiding expectations about communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. Critics note that the framework can oversimplify complex value systems and neglect structural factors such as economy, power, and policy, and that culture is dynamic and context-dependent.
