Incidentkommandant is a direct loan translation of the English term “incident commander.” In German-language emergency-management literature it is used to denote the person appointed to command an incident response on site. The designation is not uniformly adopted across all agencies or countries, where variants exist.

The incidentkommandant is responsible for the overall command at the incident scene. Core duties include defining incident objectives, prioritizing actions, ensuring responder safety, and coordinating resources from multiple agencies. The role also involves establishing the command structure, maintaining effective communications, and making decisions about tactics and transfers of command as the situation evolves. In multi-agency events, the incidentkommandant may participate in or oversee a unified command arrangement to align approaches across organizations.

In practice, German-speaking agencies more commonly use terms such as Einsatzleiter or Leitender Einsatzleiter for the on-scene leader. In large or complex incidents, a Gemeinsame Einsatzleitung (unified command) may be established to coordinate between fire, police, medical services, and other bodies. The label incidentkommandant may appear in international manuals, translated training materials, or within multinational response frameworks, but it is not the standard term in most national procedures.

Qualifications for the role typically include formal training in incident command and management, on-scene leadership and safety, risk assessment, and experience with resource management. Jurisdictional rules and agency procedures define the exact authority, responsibilities, and succession for command at an incident.
