The concept is a form of in-wheel or wheel-hub motor technology that places the motor and, in many designs, the power electronics within or immediately adjacent to each wheel, rather than in a central transaxle.

Technology in wheel motors typically involves a compact electric machine, often brushless or permanent-magnet, housed inside the wheel assembly. The system may include gearing, drive electronics, sensors, and thermal management to handle heat from continuous operation. Control software coordinates torque at each wheel, supports regenerative braking, and interfaces with steering and suspension systems to deliver variable torque distribution and, in some designs, torque vectoring.

Reliability, maintenance, and safety considerations have limited widespread adoption, though developments continue in prototypes and niche applications.

Companies such as Protean Electric and Elaphe have developed wheel-hub motor modules, and several automakers have explored or demonstrated the technology. Mainstream mass-market deployment remains limited by cost and integration challenges.
