The term is used descriptively to characterize systems, modules, or APIs that adopt immutable data structures, functional programming patterns, and event-driven state management.

Core principles include the use of immutable data structures to prevent unintended changes, composing programs from pure functions without side effects, and aiming for referential transparency. State transitions are expressed as the production of new state rather than mutation of existing state. Many immutabilitybased designs employ persistent data structures and structural sharing to balance memory use with performance. Time-travel debugging, undo/redo capabilities, and easier reasoning about code are common benefits. Event sourcing and CQRS are often used in conjunction with immutabilitybased approaches to capture every state change as a discrete event.

Applications span programming languages and ecosystems that emphasize immutabilitybased: functional languages such as Haskell, Erlang, or Clojure; JavaScript ecosystems with Immutable.js and Redux; back-end services that rely on event logs and append-only stores; and database designs favoring append-only, versioned records.

Trade-offs include potential performance overhead, higher memory consumption, and a steeper learning curve. Interfacing with systems that use pervasive mutable state or external I/O can complicate an immutabilitybased design.
