It is a symptom rather than a disease itself, and it indicates an underlying neurological issue affecting the motor pathways. The term "IV" is often used as an abbreviation for the Latin "in versus," meaning "inward and onward" or "limbs," but this etymology is not universally accepted and can be confusing. More commonly, it simply refers to weakness in the extremities.

The causes of IVparese are diverse and can range from acute conditions to chronic diseases. Traumatic injuries to the brain or spinal cord are significant causes. Infections that target the nervous system, such as meningitis or encephalitis, can also lead to paresis. Autoimmune disorders like Guillain-Barré syndrome or multiple sclerosis involve the immune system attacking nerve cells, resulting in weakness. Vascular events like strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) can damage brain areas responsible for movement. This may include medication, physical therapy for rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and in some cases, surgical intervention. The prognosis for IVparese varies greatly depending on the cause and severity of the neurological damage.
