ITILFrameworks

ITILFrameworks denotes the family of ITIL-based frameworks and practices used to manage IT services. It provides guidance for designing, delivering, and continually improving IT services to meet business needs. The core guidance is published by AXELOS and is widely adopted in IT service management (ITSM) programs.

ITIL has evolved through editions. ITIL v3, also known as the 2007 edition and its 2011 refresh, organized guidance around a service lifecycle with five stages: Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation, and Continual Service Improvement. Each stage contains processes and functions such as incident management and change management. ITIL 4, released in 2019, shifts toward a service value system and a set of 34 practices, emphasizing value co-creation, collaboration with other frameworks, and a practical, adaptable approach.

Application and scope: ITILFrameworks are designed to be tailored to organizational size, risk profile, and operating model. They support governance and continual improvement and are commonly used alongside ISO/IEC 20000, COBIT, and other frameworks to align IT services with business outcomes.

Criticism and adoption considerations: Some organizations view ITIL as bureaucratic or prescriptive. Successful adoption typically requires executive sponsorship, training, and incremental changes rather than wholesale replacement of existing processes.
